Facebook will shut down its Gaming App, their Twitch competitor

Facebook announced on Tuesday that it was shutting down its Gaming App, according to CNN Business.

Made to compete with Twitch in the gaming and live-stream arena, the platform has struggled to gain a foothold against the more popular platform. It will cease operations October 28th.

"We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of you for everything you've done to build a thriving community for gamers and fans since this app first launched," the memo, signed by The Facebook Gaming team, stated. "This was a truly a community-led effort to bring new gaming features to Facebook."

According to StreamLabs, the Facebook Gaming App held 7.9% of the market for the second quarter of 2022 versus Twitch’s 76.7% (YouTube Gaming had around 15%). Microsoft once tried to get in the market with a platform called Mixer, but also bowed out.

Streamers and games will be available but on the regular Facebook App. Android and Apple iOS app downloads will be disabled October 28th.
