Classic game BioShock to get a live-action Netflix film adaptation
The classic game, BioShock (itself a spiritual successor to the cult-classic game, System Shock) to be adapted as a live-action film by Netflix. Francis Lawrence, known for Hunger Games and I Am Legend, has been attached to the project as director.
The original BioShock was such a revolutionary experience when it first launched. The terrifying setting of an underwater Art Deco utopia as well as the deep layers of story made this both a commercial hit and a critical hit. Although I’m horror-game adverse, knowing that this was a spiritual-successor to the System Shock games made me go all in and risk the nightmares. I’m glad I did. It was like experiencing video game history. In fact, I still have the collector’s edition of the first game – Big Daddy figure and all.
Although the movie had been optioned since the launch of the original game, it seems that that version of the movie had been cancelled due to issues at Universal Studios. Seeing this getting picked up again, and possibly in a more serious manner, does give one hope.
